Detective George Mussini (retired) served with the Baltimore County, Maryland, Police Department (BCPD) for over 27 years. He was a member of the Baltimore County Peer Support and Wellness Team and has served in many different roles, including police officer, juvenile offender unit, community outreach, police academy instructor, domestic violence liaison, crime prevention, and youth leadership programs, and also served as college professor of criminal justice for 12 years. Detective Mussini began his career as a first responder in 1992, when he joined the Rockville Centre, New York, Fire Department and the Auxiliary Police Department. Detective Mussini is a certified subject-matter expert on a variety of law enforcement wellness and safety topics. He is also a lead peer-support coach for the Instinctual Trauma Response program. In 2015, Detective Mussini was involved in an off-duty critical incident that was captured on video in a metropolitan subway. He performed effectively while intervening during a stabbing incident. The incident involved a male subject who was stabbing a female in public. The subject then became fixated on Detective Mussini and attempted to attack him with a large knife. He did everything to avoid the confrontation until it became imminent, and he ultimately had to stop the attack with his off-duty firearm. The video also captures the response of law enforcement officers and Detective Mussini’s actions, which avoided a blue-on-blue incident. Detective Mussini has discussed this incident for various audiences as it relates to law enforcement involvement as well as the importance of officer safety and wellness. After retiring from the BCPD in October of 2024, Detective Mussini joined the fulltime ranks of the Institute for Intergovernmental Research on the Law Enforcement Safety and Wellness Team.
